A woman was giving an injured squirrel medical care at 0300, but apparently didn't obtain consent, because the vermin bit her on the thumb. Brought it in, still alive, in a box, insisting that it be checked for rabies. Told her we aren't a vet, and we don't do animal testing, and herbivores don't carry rabies.

Hi, I am a vet, and just for your info, herbivores can carry rabies. This should have been referred to the county health department and a local DVM for rabies testing.

Squirrels are omnivorous. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squirrel#Diet While it is true that squirrels are infrequent carriers of rabies, it still should have been referred to the county health department.
